oh and one more thing [we would do well to...]

Thursday, February 28, 2013
would do well to slow down a little/ focus on the significant & truly see the things that matter most

amen, dieter.

thursday threads [skulls & chains]

you know you're a grown up when:
  1. you have conversations about doing your taxes and "married filing jointly" is uttered
  2. your friends are celebrating years of marriage and having babies
  3. you go to things like the greater philly home show on sundays
  4. you have full blown conversations with people about lawn care
  5. you test mattresses for an entire afternoon [check out my instagram: natalie_hodak]
[and here's what i wore for my afternoon of grown-up-ness]

[alexander mcqueen skull scarf (via ebay), zara long sleeve top - similar, zara tee, j.crew pixie pants, stuart weitzman 50/50 boots, stella mccartney falabella bag]

you know you're not quite 100% a grown up when a gust of wind tries to blow you away, your hubby captures it, & you find it so funny that you have no problem posting it on your blog.

i think i'm about 85%.

wear it wednesday [beauty with heart]

Wednesday, February 27, 2013
[i'd like to take a little break from outfits on this 'wear it wednesday' and talk about wearing beauty products, in all the latest beauty trends, with heart.]

on saturday, i had the pleasure of attending the grand opening of the new look for the body shop usa in the kop mall hosted by the ever fabulous jessie of trend hungry and co-founder of  philly fabb. i'd seen the body shop around before, but didn't know exactly what they were about until i attended the event.

started in england in 1976, the body shop quickly made a name for itself as an environmentally conscious, natural, ethical beauty company [now boasting 2,500 stores in over 60 markets all over the world] and on saturday they were celebrating a campaign called beauty with heart.

what does that mean?

it means that all of their [amazing] beauty and body products follow their 5 core values  to support community fair trade, defend human rights, be against animal testing, activate self-esteem, and protect our planet [you can read more about their values here].

it means that they believe true beauty comes from the heart, that it's more than just a pretty face, it's about feeling good and doing good, too. they make their products with love and care from the finest raw ingredients from the four corners of the globe. they harness the skills of artisan farmers and add their expertise to create effective products that are wonderful to use. they trade fairly so communities benefit as well as the consumers. they never test on animals, and all their products are 100% vegetarian. they campaign with passion on issues close to their heart because activism is in their blood. they always keep people, animals, and the planet in mind. they practice beauty... with heart.

[that sounds pretty awesome, doesn't it?]

here are a few shots of the event:

[i love that the store had a community wall showcasing their involvement in both global and local campaigns]

[i'm a little squeamish about overpowering smells in bath/body/beauty stores, but all of their products just smelled clean and not at all overpowering]

[i was gifted a tube of this absinthe purifying hand cream, and i'm already obsessed]

[how awesome is this? the store is full of reminders back to the body shop's core values]

[um, drool. i want to live here]

[i got a nice little shot of the store while i was getting my makeup done VIP style in front]

now you might be thinking, ok, great, so they're the mother theresa/rachel carson/sarah mclachlan [you know, of the animal commercials] of beauty brands, but how good is their product?

i'm here to tell you that it's amazing.

after getting a tour of the gorgeous new store and the low-down from jennifer (director of brand communications & values) & lara (of bratskeir & company) on the beauty with heart campaign, i was treated to a beauty makeover! [not just because i was there for the event, they do this every day, for free!

the store was packed so i got to get my makeup done out in the walkway [VIP style!] and let me tell you, i couldn't have been happier with the result. my skin was glowing, the products felt weightless, and my eyes popped! not only did my makeup artist listen to what i liked, but she explained how to apply the different products for maximum results! i ended up walking out with foundation [i'm shade 5], eye shadow, eye liner, foundation brush, lip stick, mascara, blush, aloe protective serum, and eye serum! [i went out that night and my makeup looked amazing until i took it off at 1am, talk about all day wear!]

[the finished product: me, a little enhanced but still very natural]

on top of all those goodies i purchased, i walked away with  free lip gloss, too [to add to my ever-growing lip gloss collection] and a 'love your body' card which has some sweet perks [like 10% off every day!], check it out here.

i could probably go on and on for another umpteen pages about how much i like the body shop's products, and, how i feel great supporting a company that truly believes in making a difference, but i'll let you go and experience the body shop for yourself. [and trust me, you won't be disappointed!]

all opinions expressed are my own.

tuesday threads [pink & printed]

Tuesday, February 26, 2013
since it's actually light out when i leave for work now [woohoo!] i decided to force the hubby to snap some shots monday morning.

so, uh, this is what i wore on monday. it's my favorite printed tie-front loft blouse, a nice bright pink loft skirt, and [come to think of it] black loft ballet flats which i lived in all of last winter. if you don't count the target tights, i'm a head-to-toe loft spokesmodel. a short, pink & printed spokesmodel.

[loft blouse (old), loft skirt (old), loft flats (old)]

you're welcome, loft, you're welcome.

monday musings [coveting closets: wendy nguyen]

Monday, February 25, 2013
i'm not much of a collector. i don't really like antiques, or figurines, or knick-knacks of any kind, but there are two items i can get behind collecting: bag and shoes.

this week's coveting closets focuses on a gorgeous blogger who has an amazing bag collection that she's carefully curated over the years.

if i could shop her closet i'd pick:

1) this celine

2) this mulberry

3) this balenciaga

4) this givenchy

5) this

...and this chanel [i really like chanel]

[all images via]

now that's a collection i can get behind.

happy monday, you guys!

thursday threads [tales from online shopping part deux]

Thursday, February 21, 2013
you guys are in luck, because it's story time again!

i, have once again, been humbled by online shopping karma. [story of my life]. this time, it was all about the pixie jodhpur pants, and here is what happened.

enamored by how much i love my regular pixie pants, i decided [not having learned my lesson about ordering pants online] to order a pair of pixie jodhpur pants, online, without trying them on. since i was a 0 in the pixie, i assumed i was a 0 in the johdpur and placed my order during one target-less lunch break at work. i waited [im]patiently for my lovely pants with grand designs of wearing them on date night with some cute heels or something [i hadn't exactly thought that far out]. when the pants arrived, i pulled them out of their bag, took off the tag [idiot move] and put them in my closet [still not having tried them on]. when the designated saturday rolled around, i whipped out my little jodhpurs and wiggled in one, recently un-exercised leg at a time...

...and they fit great!

until i turned around to examine the derriere and found a gaping hole in the seam. [of course].

after speaking with the fabulous people at j.crew, they apologized, and promptly promised to send me out another pair next day air. not bad for customer service.

i waited another 2 days for my new jodhpurs to arrive and when they did, i was anxious to inspect them immediately.

and guess what?

gaping hole in the buttox region. it's like i got the exact same pair of pants again [ones i had put in the return mail that morning].

at this point, it was like that scene from anchorman when baxter ate the whole wheel of cheese and ron burgundy couldn't even be mad because it was unbelievable. i wasn't even mad. there was an entire wheel of figurative cheese missing from the fridge and baxter had scarfed it down!

j.crew customer service was again, amazing, and overnighted me my now 3rd pair of jodhpurs which were examined carefully before even being tried on.

but as the old saying goes, 3rd time's the charm! i present you with how i [finally] styled the j.crew jodhpur pixie pants:

[target camo jacket, nordstrom rack black tee, j.crew pixie jodhpur pants, target wedge sneakers, louis vuitton accessories pouch]

[i call this my flamingo pose]

[the leather details give it a lil extra sumthin' sumthin']

[shhh... i'm hunting wabbits]

[striking a pose like a nice little fashion blogger]

i should just stop buying pants online, shouldn't i?

wear it wednesday [modern florals]

Wednesday, February 20, 2013
you guys, look at all that [stupid] snow.

i've decided that i'm going to ignore it and wear as many florals as possible and pretend it's springtime.

so for this round of wear-it-wednesday, i'm wearing my new favorite modern floral [that's a thing now, modern florals] skirt from... [sigh] target. ideally, i'd be wearing this skirt with a striped, sleeveless blouse and some open-toe jimmy choos, but since you know, it's still winter, i layered up with a cardigan, warm tights, and my favorite zara boots.

[banana republic cardigan (old) - similar, old navy blouse (old) - similar, target floral pencil skirt, target tights, zara boots (old)]

 [awkward kiss face]

what do you think? would you wear modern florals? and how would you take this look into spring?

tuesday threads [it's only tuesday]

Tuesday, February 19, 2013
when it's your day off, and you're having a less than stellar hair day, and you need to run errands/go sit in the doctor's office for over an hour and a half for a 5 second referral, your best bet is a nice big hat [and a kindle to keep yourself occupied]:

[target hat (seen here), vince sweater via marshall's (seen here), loft jeans (old), h&m patent pumps - similar, stella mccartney bag]

 [hats on]

  [hats off]

and, it's only tuesday

monday musings [coveting closet: the olsen twins]

Monday, February 18, 2013
i grew up watching full house and i was always more of a DJ fan [and i may or may not have had several outfits that kimmy gibbler would have gladly worn... i know] but watching the olsen twins grow up, realize their style, and start their own fashion labels [the row, elizabeth & james, olsenboye], i realized that i identified with what they wore [or designed] much more.

if i could shop their closets, i would pick:

1) ashley's corset-top dress
Ashley Olsen
[image via]

2) mary-kate's flannel

3) ashley's shearling jacket

4) mary-kate's sequin dress

5) ashley's scarf & shoes:

i identify a little more with ashley's cleaner lines and neutral color choices, but i love going a little more boho like mary-kate sometimes! [oh, and those kimmy gibbler-esque clothes are loooong gone].

who's your favorite olsen?
