friday favs [silk pants]

i must have been possessed the other day when i bought these ombre silk pants* from h&m.

see, i'm trying to only buy versatile pieces [and apparently, something about ombre silk pants screamed "versatile!" to me] and to help me do that i've started playing a game called "dress 'em up/dress 'em down" in my head as i consider a new purchase.

the rules are simple, if i can dress it up and dress it down with pieces that i already have in my closet, then the item in question is on the table for purchase.

when i thought about it, i realized that these bad boys can be paired with a silk shirt, fun blazer, and heels for a quirky date look or a white tee [half-tucked], flats, fedora, & fringe bag to look deliciously boho running errands.

the pants passed my "dress 'em up/dress 'em down" test [as well as my "under $20" test] and i can't wait to rock them both ways!

*quick note: these run a bit tight in the thigh area, so if you have thighs, any thighs at all, size up and take in the [elastic] waist a bit!

thursday tresses [mermaid waves]

Thursday, March 28, 2013
wavy

i always try to do loose, beachy waves [they're my favorite] on day 3 of no shampoo. if i'm lucky enough [and by lucky i mean i haven't had time to go to hot yoga which always prompts a hair washing afterwards], this is what my hair looks like with a little dry shampoo for oomph, a little [curling] wand action, and a spritz [or 20] of flex hold hair spray.

it never ceases to remind me of summer [or now that my hair is pretty long, to make me feel like a mermaid].

what's your favorite hairstyle?

we went where? wednesday [nyc]

Wednesday, March 27, 2013
surprise! no outfit post today. there's [unfortunately] not enough time in the day lately.

so i'm hoping you'll forgive me and instead, i humbly give you my ode to new york city from last weekend's trip.

i love new york. the hustle. the bustle. the skyline. the honking horns. [imagine me staring all googly-eyed into space]. it just feels so alive, so there to me.

this past weekend, i was lucky enough to tag along as one of my best friend's plus one to the big apple.

so sit back, relax, and enjoy the [super high-quality iphone] photos i just couldn't stop snapping:

we stayed at the trump soho [highly, highly recommended] and this was our view from sky-high, at lunch. amazing isn't it? a girl could get used to this!

we were staying for 2 nights, and between the two of us brought roughly 15 pairs of shoes. i wore 6 of mine, so it was obviously right to over pack! [duh]

silly me didn't understand why my friend kept telling me there was wine in the room [at 4am when we got in on friday morning, mind you] until i finally picked it up, and saw this. seriously, the sweetest way to ask! i'm so excited to help her with the wedding [not to mention honored to have her ask me to be a MoH]!

did i mention that the trump soho was amazing? i did? great. well there was a full-on chair in our bathroom.

and a tub with a view of the empire state building [you know, if you sat the other way and looked off to the side]. we tried waving to the nice people working in the office building across from the hotel, but quickly figured out that the windows were tinted. [hopefully].

there were bellinis and bloody mary's at les amis. and the most delicious croque monsieur.

finally made it to the piperlime store and got to try on the tinley road faux leather shorts. [good thing i did because i wouldn't have kept them had i ordered online, and of course, a total bummer because i really wanted them to look good].

we visited the various designer thrift stores in soho and i said 'hi' to some balenciagas.

and of course we popped into anthropologie and i ogled this fun bag.

i got to peruse what goes around comes around.

and drool over their vintage chanel case. [an entire case].

while the bug-eyed look isn't for me, i do feel like a total celeb in these bad boys.

oh and of course we had to dash into dash [and i had to take an ootd selfie in their dressing room while trying on some gorgeous blazers].

comfort was key to walking around soho on friday.

i got to test out my new tieks. they were so comfortable, naturally.

we "accidentally" stumbled in to georgetown cupcakes. and split the key lime & salted caramel. heavenly.

dinners in nyc are beyond explaining. we ate like queens. on friday night it was tuna & filet mignon at del frisco's along with the best wine i've ever had and saturday it was tapas at las ramblas - a restaurant just a little bigger than my office at work [so it's waaaaay small] with the most amazing meatballs ever [and i've had a lot of meatballs].

i even got to rock my little turban headband i bought the other day on our way home. [and clearly, not a stitch of makeup. sorry!]

but wait, there's more.

friday night, we met some of my college friends at mcsorley's [the oldest bar in the city], which after walking into fully decked out from dinner [and for a while being the only ladies in the place], turned out to be amazingly fun with everyone as friendly as can be. [shout out to cliff from stylitics - how you doin'?] for those of you who are indecisive with drinks, mcsorley's only has a choice of dark or light beer and both are delicious.

saturday night we had to wait before dinner at las ramblas so we ventured into organika wine bar and met the funnest bartender [hey zach!] & wait staff ever. not to mention amazing wine, food [get the polenta roll!], and ambiance.

i could really, really see myself living in nyc. shopping in soho on saturdays and walking the neighborhoods on sundays. i could get used to the little flower shops that i kept seeing everywhere and the way that the city buzzes. i could easily 'do brunch' at a different place each weekend and meet new people every day. i could.

[but it's always so nice to get back home.]

til next time, nyc [you alluring siren, you], til next time.

try it out tuesday [clarisonic mia, a review]

Tuesday, March 26, 2013
[i love sharing products i've tried with others, so every once in a while, i'll bring you a "try it out" day! and here's the first one:]

Clarisonic - Mia™ Skin Cleansing SystemClarisonic - Mia™ Skin Cleansing SystemClarisonic - Mia™ Skin Cleansing System
[image via. mine's green!]

i made a comment on see mo go's makeup routine the other day that i use my clarisonic mia as a part of my routine and sweet mo asked what i thought of the clarisonic brush, so after 2 weeks of consistent use [i've had it over a month, but, i uh, forget sometimes] here's my review:

firstly [is that a word?], i want to explain what the clarisonic brush is and what it's supposed to do. basically, the brush uses a sonic frequency to help cleanse the skin. this frequency moves the brush at more than 300x per second which helps thoroughly clean pores.

  • removes makeup 6x better than traditional methods [like using your hands]
  • clears pores and reduces the appearance of pore size
  • cleanses so thoroughly that skincare products absorb better
  • creates noticeably healthier looking skin

[they had me at 'reduces pore size', where'd they have you?]

i went to sephora to get my clarisonic and they did a great job of demonstrating the different brushes [there are 3: aria, mia, and mia 2]. i walked out with the mia which, at $119, is the cheapest of the 3, with 1 speed [as opposed to the multiple speeds of the other two].

i have combination skin that's oily in the summer and dry in the winter. i'm prone to breakouts [that i have under control with proactiv] and already have a set skincare routine that really works for me, so it was important to me that i wasn't "stuck" to a particular cleanser that "works best" with this tool i was buying, and i happily found out that i could use any cleanser [as long as it was non-abrasive, so stay away from those scrubs], including my proactiv. [so far, so good].

here's how you're supposed to use the clarisonic:

Charge the handle in the charging cradle.Wet your skin and apply cleanser to the brush head.Use circular motion; 20 sec. on forehead, 20 sec. on nose/chin, 10 sec. on each cheek.

  1. charge it
  2. wet your skin and apply the cleanser to the brush head
  3. use a circular motion; 20 seconds on the forehead, 20 seconds on the nose/chin, and 10 seconds on each cheek
my verdict?

i used my clarisonic mia mostly at night because that's when the bulk of my skincare routine happens and initially, i only noticed that my skin felt cleaner, but didn't notice any changes in pores [so annoying] or the overall promised healthiness

BUT [big but] after two solid weeks of consistent use once a day [you could do twice a day], i'm definitely starting to see some changes. for instance, [and sorry if this is gross] a stress zit that set up shop on my chin disappeared [i credit the mia with letting my proactiv get in deeper] and my foundation, when i wear it, lays better [if that makes sense], and my skin, on days when i don't use foundation, looks better

so, while it may take a couple of weeks of consistent use, the clarisonic brush [whether you get the mia, mia 2 or aria] is totally worth the splurge.

have any of you tried it? what was your experience?

happy friday, indeed! i can't tell you how excited i am that joe fresh is now at jcpenney. i've long admired the simple lines and fun prints of this sweet label but with no online store and not a brick & mortar close to me, i had no way of purchasing [boo-hiss].

thursday threads [san clemente blues]

Thursday, March 21, 2013
little ole me walked into the gap the other day with full intentions to purchase these floral skimmer jeans [because i clearly need another floral article of clothing]. but got completely side tracked when i saw the perfection of the blue [san clemente blue to be specific] on these instead.

to top off the gorgeous color, they're part of the skimmer line, so on shorties like me (i'm 5'3) they're the perfect length and hit right at the bottom of my ankle.

all thoughts of the floral skimmers went out the window [although they fit amazing too] and i walked out with my san clemente blues.

[it also kind of helps that they were 30% off! anyone else catch that sale?]

[urban outfitters faux leather jacket (old), neon scarf (old), kain label striped tee (here in orange), gap legging skimmer jeans, gap leopard pointy toe flats (in stores)]

if i have to have the blues, these are the only kind i want.

how would you wear your gap skimmers?

wear it wednesday [pinspired]

Wednesday, March 20, 2013
i was going through my pinterest clothes board [to get some outfit inspiration] and realized that i'd pinned this particular image twice.

[via]

it's probably because a) i really like this and b) i have all the pieces to put it together, so i thought, what the heck, let's give it a go!

...except that i decided i wanted to wear my new grey maxi dress my sister got me at forever 21 [thanks, boo!] instead of a shirt and that instead of a white blazer, i'd wear my trusty white [p]leather vest from h&m.

i guess you could say i was pinspired.

[f21 knit maxi dress, h&m faux leather vest (old), h&m necklace (old)]

[a little angelina jolie leg action for you fine readers]

[f21 metallic d'orsay flats. and they're amazing]

what's your favorite pin-turned-outfit that you've put together?

tuesday threads [monochrome madewell]

Tuesday, March 19, 2013
i walked into madewell the other day & decided that i needed to get one of everything so i could look as cute as one of my favorite bloggers, annie of the other side of gray.

thankfully for my wallet, my common sense won out & all i walked away with was this station workshirt that i'd been eyeing up since it showed up in madewell's stock.

but now that i had at least one madewell piece, nothing was going to stop me from trying to copy-cat one of annie's signature looks with my own little monochrome twist [in green for st. patty's day, natch].

how'd i do?
[madewell station workshirt, knit scarf (a gift), zara tee, diesel jogg jeans (c/o), coconuts booties (old)]

[i have no idea, just go with it]

also, can we just talk about these jeans for a second? they're from diesel's new jogg jean line and are literally part sweatpants.

[i'll let that sink in.]

that's right, you read that right, jeans that are as comfy as sweatpants. [it's as if my college prayers have been heard by the jean deities and answered years later]. i opted for this fun worn-in look and have been wearing them every chance i get. [ah-mazing].
