friday favs [summer skin]

friday favs

happy friday! i'm so ready for the weekend, but guess what the temp's supposed to be? in the 90s. and sunny. excellent for some deck-lounging! [except that we're probably painting the kitchen... dun dun dun...].

now, it may be my "old age" talking, but i've been throwing on a hat, wearing sunglasses, and using foundation with SPF when going outside in the sun lately.

but just because you're trying to be conscious of the effects of the sun, doesn't mean you can't look fashionable. [you definitely don't need to look like this!]

target [surprise, surprise] has these amazing straw baseball hats [that's right, i know, let that sink in] in blue, tan, pink, and black which you could pair with some lust-worthy mirrored ray-bans, dab on the only sunscreen i'll use on my oily face [maybe 110 is a little much, but i use 30 for non-beach, 50 for beach] and look like a stylish, sun-protected rock star [or at least cute].

how do you protect your summer skin?

i did it! i found a tassel necklace that i think rivals the gorgeousness of the rachel zoe version i drooled over a while back

and get this, it's only $28!

after stumbling upon it while perusing baublebar, i promptly threw it in my shopping cart and made it mine.

i can't wait to see it [and blog it] in person, so stay tuned!

wear it wednesday [is it a tunic or a dress]

Wednesday, May 29, 2013
there is really nothing better to me than a great boho look, so when i walked by this little number at h&m, i had to have it.

after wearing it [with my new favorite madewell drifter shades] during a particular windy day, and possibly flashing a rite aid parking lot in pennsburg [don't ask], i'm not 100% sure whether this piece is a dress or a tunic.

but i am sure i'll be rocking it again!

tuesday threads [go-to work]

Tuesday, May 28, 2013
and the long weekend is over. [gross]. so to ease us into the week, i like to throw on an easy combo when going to work.

for me, easy work-wear is either a great shift dress or a pencil skirt/top combo.

i wore this to work last week when i knew i had to look professional but had to be in earlier than usual.

[loft top & skirt (old)]

friday favs [summer nails]

friday favs [summer nails]
when i think of summer, i think of flowy maxi dresses, cold drinks in sweating glasses, that buzz of insects as the sun sets, never leaving the house without sunglasses, and fun nail polish.

i'm completely enamored with any color essie puts into the universe and this summer, i'm thinking i'll have blanc, st. lucia lilac, bikini so teeny, hip-anema, and first timer on heavy rotation. [in fact, i got a little dose of bikini so teeny this week!].

so come on summertime, i'm ready [or at least my nails are!]

p.s. i'm taking monday off [both work & blogging] so i hope everyone has an amazing memorial day weekend! [doing anything fun?]

you think i'd be over the whole chanel espadrille thing. but i'm not. they're beautiful. and expensive. [damnit!

in the name of fashion [and savings] i took it upon myself to find a cute alternative and wouldn't you know it, tory burch + nordstrom's half-yearly sale to the rescue!

these adorable espadrilles are a steal at $77.05 [down from an also reasonable $115]!

the only question is, what are you [and frankly, i] waiting for?

tuesday threads [distressed DIY]

Tuesday, May 21, 2013
i've always liked distressed denim [to the dismay of my grandmother who always wanted to "fix" my ripped jeans. and did once. i was not thrilled] and have owned many a pair that i've purchased already distressed [which i now realize was totally silly].

but ever since i saw julie sarinana in these vintage distressed shorts, i felt the bite of the distressed bug and decided to DIY my own. [that's right, i said DIY].

let me start off by saying that i'm so not DIY - i mean, i'm crafty and all, but - it's not really my cup of tea. so, spoiler alert, since i was successful in my distressing mission, you know this is easy-peasy.

i did a little research on how to distress and all the tutorials had the same basic concept:

  • get a pair of jeans [to cut into shorts] or shorts,
  • something sharp to cut with,
  • some sandpaper, and
  • have access to a washer/dryer
step 1: get get jeans or shorts. if you get jeans and want them to be shorts, cut them into shorts [i wasn't brave enough for this step]. i went the slacker route and bought a pair of boyfriend shorts from h&m [lighter version seen here] a size bigger than i normally wear [for maximum bagginess].

step 2: use your sharp object [i opted for kitchen scissors] to make horizontal cuts in the shorts wherever you want them to be distressed. i did 2 sets of cuts on either side, making roughly 4 cuts per "section".

step 3: cut the pocket seams to help them fray. don't forget the back pockets! this particular pair was cuffed, so i cut the seam and uncuffed them.

step 4:  rub your seams and cuts with sandpaper. you don't have to go all crazy with this because the washer does most of your fraying for you.

step 5: throw those bad-boys in the washer. i threw mine in for 10 minutes and then let them air dry overnight [which didn't totally dry them, so i threw them in the dryer for 10 minutes that did the trick and doesn't mess up the fraying at all.] you should see the finished product when they come out of the washer and can make any necessary snips with your scissors if needed.

the finished product!

[and this is how i wore them]

pretty easy right? i think i'll be distressing a lot more stuff. [watch out, jeans, watch out!]
