mama monday [organizing your freezer stash]

Monday, June 30, 2014
i've decided to post about random new mama stuff i pick up along the way. not like i haven't been doing it anyway since i suck at taking outfit pictures anymore [but there's one coming on wear it wednesday!], but now there's a fun title to the series.

disclaimer: it may just happen this once. who knows.

one random thing i've been obsessing over is my freezer stash. for all you non-breastfeeding people out there, a freezer stash is the stash of breast milk you have on ice so you can be away from your baby for more than 3 hours. and much like the squirrel gathers acorns for the winter, working moms who breastfeed spend hours pumping to build up this sacred stockpile.

i started pumping for my stash when lily was 1 month old and i've built up quite the little stockpile. unfortunately, due to my complete inability to organize [especially the refrigerator] it always seems as though i don't have enough.

i give you, exhibit a [my freezer - this is a judgement-free zone, yes?]:

and it terrifies me to pieces.

while pumping the other day [with my new hands free pumping contraption, which btw, is a whole other post altogether] i stumbled upon some really sweet DIY storage solutions.

first, why not use an empty soda can fridge pack holder thing like this smart mama?

Frozen breastmilk storage def doing this now because my freezer is getting full and that will also help tom use them in the right order

i love this idea because you can clearly see how much milk you have [and i'm a big fan of those corn dogs she has pictured].

orrrr, you could go the super crafty route and do one of these gift bag jobs:

Breastmilk Storage Idea! Take a gift bag that is the size of your storage bags and cut a small slit in the bottom of the bag. This way the oldest gets used first :)

you basically get a gift bag with a bottom roughly the size of your breast milk storage bags, cut a slit [i've just decided i don't like that word... slit... -shudder-] in the bottom, place your bags inside [oldest at the first] that way you can just pull the bag out when you need it.

of the two methods, i'm most likely going to stick with the first because i need to see how many ounces are in the bag before i pull it out so i can add up the 18 or so ounces my daughter drinks while at day care.

also would it be weird if i used a beer fridge pack instead of soda? no? i didn't think so.

how do you organize your stash?

p.s. a non-DIY route would be one of these!

thursday treats [kumari hair oil]

Thursday, June 19, 2014

so i'm really excited about this, you guys.

since having lily, my hair hasn't been it's best. it's not the most amazing hair anyways, and then losing all those pregnancy hormones, [and completely neglecting it for 3 months while on maternity leave] well, it's just "blah" now. i've been reading here and there about the benefits of oil - for hair or face [and it totally scares the greasy hair/oily skinned person that is me]! so when aarti gala of kumari hair oil reached out to me to see if i wanted to try it, i jumped at the chance.

for the past 2 weeks i've been using this oil as directed:
  • apply oil to scalp starting at the roots and working your way down through the ends [you want to make sure your hair is covered but not over-saturated
  • leave oil in for 30 minutes or if you're feeling adventurous, overnight [i've been washing my hair at night so i just do this a half hour before my shower]
  • wash out with a mild shampoo and if you want, lightly condition your hair [i've been doing both but if you have naturally oily hair you can skip the conditioner]
and that's it! it's that easy.

so what's the verdict?

i'm happy so say that this new mama's hair is noticeably softer and shinier even after 2 weeks [and my fears of being greasy mcgee were totally unfounded]. i'm excited to keep using it, see if my hair gets stronger, and hopefully ditch the tub full of hair products that's taking up prime real estate in my bathroom closet.

would you try hair oil?

disclaimer: i was provided a sample of kumari hair oil but all opinions are my own!

[julie vos coin charm necklace and bracelet]

for the past week and a half all i've worn to work are dresses because my work pants don't quite fit yet. luckily, the weather is nice and warm and i have a huge box of dresses in the basement that are going to get a workout this summer!

p.s. new blue shades [purchased during a nordstrom sale]!
p.p.s. linking up with the pleated poppy!

friday favs [new mama wear]

friday favs [nursing wear]

since i've totally sucked at getting consistent outfit posts out, i thought i'd share my uniform these days.

much like the leggings during pregnancy, dresses [because my pre-pregnancy pants are still snug] that i can easily nurse or pump in have taken over my daily wardrobe. my two current favorites are this gap tank dress [i have it in 2 colors] and this august salt dress i ordered from piperlime [it also comes in black]. i've been pairing them with my coin charm necklace and bracelet from julie vos. check out her collection and don't forget to sign up for emails for the "friday deals"!

i also accidentally stumbled upon the best summer shoes in the universe [and i'm not exaggerating]. these old navy sandals are so comfortable that i feel like i'm walking on a cloud.

p.s. it's finally friday [yay!], i've made it through my first week back at work, and will be spending the next two days cuddling my daughter. have a lovely weekend!

tuesday tales [3 month update]

Tuesday, June 10, 2014

my little chubby cheeked chipmunk is 3 months old already [as of the 6th]!

this past month lily:

  • gained some more weight! [12lbs 1oz at her 2 month check-up]
  • holds her head up like a champ
  • is being a rock star at sleeping through the night [still knocking on wood with this one!]
  • did 3 days at day care before my first official return [yesterday], and loved it!
  • took a successful long car trip [with my mom in the backseat entertaining her, of course]
  • became way more talkative [and my husband is convinced she said "hi" to him]
  • held her bottle all by herself for a hot minute
  • outgrew her bath hammock
she likes: eating [obviously] and especially nursing, smiling at mama and daddy, staring at people's faces, grabbing mama's hair and pulling hard [i may need that mom haircut soon], being held, bath time, her pacifier, her owl rattle/soft bunny/sharp-pei puppy toy [and basically any toy with eyes].

she dislikes: having the bottle taken away from her to be burped [we're talking serious screaming here], being too hot [and especially in the car seat], being swaddled [at least at the beginning], being wet/dirty.

i'm also testing out the honest company diaper/wipe bundle and so far, so good. i'll do a little review [for price, coverage, and diaper rash factor] after we give them another month!

p.s. beau's obsessed with licking lily. face, hands, and [especially, particularly, deliciously] her feet
